This weekend was kind of crazy because the girl had to work again, taking pictures of people winning pie contests and stuff at a festival, but the Quad Cities River Bandits were giving away oven mitts at the game on Satuday and I really wanted to go.
She had only one hour to make me a new fan shirt.

The Hawaiian shirt she got at the game last week was a bigger size than she wears, so she cut the bottom six inches off for my new shirt. I put it on with my factory shirt, which turned out to be a good layering piece.

It has Rascal on the back! I thought it turned out so neat even though the girl said it wasn’t perfect.
After she got done working we met up with her friend and were going to be an hour too early for the game, so we stopped at Contrary Brewing in Muscatine.

I had the Contrary Light and my favorite fried pickles again! The girl was so hungry she ate an entire platter of fries by herself.

Then we went to Modern Woodmen Park and I got my River Bandits oven mitt. It looks like a catcher’s mitt — so cool!

The stands were pretty empty this week, probably because temperatures were in the 90s and it was really, really hot. But it was a great game against the Lansing Lugnuts, and at the end of the 9th inning the score was tied 1:1. They went an extra inning and the Bandits won!

Today I wanted to do some baking and try out my new oven mitt. I chose Watermelon Cupcakes from my Bakeshop Classics book, page 79.

I told the girl a few days ago that is what I wanted to make, and she was like, I don’t know, Jones, it calls for watermelon gelatin and I don’t know if I can get that. I was like, I saw it on Amazon for $12 and she was like, hmm.
She ended up finding it at Walmart, so we had everything we needed.

I lined the cupcake tin with green liners just like the book showed.

I had never used a mixer before so the girl showed me how.

That was one of my favorite things. I really like how the batter drips off the beaters.

I tasted the batter after I filled all the cupcake cups and it was interesting. The girl tasted it too and she was like, you know how your blog is called Questionable Projects? And I was like, yeah, and she was like, I think you chose the perfect recipe.

The cupcakes baked up perfectly and I got to use my new mitt.

While they cooled we made the frosting. It turned green from the watermelon gelatin but I knew it was supposed to be pink from the book. I was worried it wasn’t going to turn out right.

But once we added the pink food coloring it turned out perfect!

Then it was time to frost the cupcakes. The girl put the frosting into a plastic bag with a special tip on the end and showed me how to pipe it on so it looked professional.

Then I had to sprinkle them with mini chocolate chips, and they turned out almost like the picture!

I invited Sketch and Munch Munch to try a cupcake with me.

Munch Munch said he wanted the first bite.

I couldn’t tell from his expression what he thought of it, so I had the next bite. It was my first taste of cake and frosting and I thought it was good! The cake was soft and the frosting sweet.

Munch Munch was like, Dude, how did you make that?

And Sketch was like, Jones, you’re a great baker, eh?

Then they were both like, group hug!
Cake is a pretty magical thing.
