Questionable Projects

A 9-inch plushie takes on American life

Beached

After a week of not doing much more than taking long walks and perusing cookbooks with Munch Munch, my weekend was off-the-charts exciting. I visited two new bakeries, walked on a sandy beach, and went inside a women’s restroom at a park. Those are just the highlights.

On Friday night the girl came home from a long day at work and told me we were going to a beach the next day, and it was going to be warm, so I needed a new shirt to wear. She got to work cutting and sewing a new banana-print fabric we picked out earlier in the week, and just as it was starting to get dark outside, I had a brand new summer shirt to wear.

Because the shirt was finished in the nick of time for our next outing, I had no time to pose in it and show off around the apartment, and more notably, there was no bling to go with it. She promised me we would find something fun to go with my new shirt when we went shopping.

The girl’s friend picked us up on Saturday morning and once again we were starving, so our first stop was a bakery called Prairie Flower. The breakfast treats were all new to me, so the girl suggested I try a mixed berry scone. It was more crumbly than I expected but the frosting was nice and sweet.

We drove a bit more and ended up at a place called Lake Red Rock, in the same town where we saw the tulips last week. There I did something really weird.

I went with the girl into the bathroom.

Then we walked out to the lake, which was a beautiful blue. At first I explored the rocks.

The sun was warm, and I couldn’t wait to explore the sandy beach, so we walked down to the waterfront next.

Wow was that fun! The girl said I needed to be careful not to get wet or get sand in my fur, so I took care to stay clean and not fall down even though walking in the sand was pretty hard. It moved under my feet and felt kind of gritty.

We spent a while at the beach, but it started to get hot, and the girl worried we would dehydrate, so we walked back to the car and drove to downtown Pella. There we walked along the long blue canal we saw last time, and we came across this giant post card, where I had my picture taken. I’m almost invisible!

Inside the shops we looked for a tulip pin for me but we didn’t find one. We did find lots of wooden shoes, though, including these in my size. I tried them on just for fun and they made me feel tall.

The girl found some tulip-scented soap she liked, and I did end up with a pin with a bag of dutch flour on it that is kind of odd but I really liked.

Outside the shop we found this funny pair of shoes, so I got inside and pretended I was sailing a boat. Ahoy!

We had a great time shopping and eating again, although the restaurants closed early and we ended up driving around the downtown square again and again because we were so hungry and confused. Eventually we ended up having some fish and chips, but that happened at a chain restaurant and the girl said there was no need for me to mention that.
